Judge denies injunction to give Montgomery Co. families ability to opt kids out of LGBTQ book readings Parents cannot opt their children out of Montgomery County Public Schools lessons involving books with LGBTQ characters for the time being, a federal judge ruled Thursday.Three families are suing the school board over its decision not to notify parents when such books would be read and not to allow them to opt their kids out of those lessons. The families say the no-opt-out policy violates their and their children’s rights under the First Amendment, the parents’ substantive due process rights under the 14th Amendment and Maryland law.As part of the suit, the families requested a preliminary injunction that would immediately require the school board to give them notice and an ability to opt out of the book readings as the suit plays out. A U.S. District Court judge in Maryland ruled Thursday the families did not meet the requirements for an injunction.“Because a constitutional violation is not likely or imminent, it follows that the plaintiffs are notlikely to suffe...

Cleveland Guardians naming outfield bleachers in honor of late drummer/fan John Adams CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Guardians are naming their left-field bleachers at Progressive Field in honor of John Adams, the longtime drummer who died this year. The team said Thursday that the tribute to Adams, who was a fixture at Cleveland baseball games for nearly 50 years, will begin on opening day in 2024.Adams began his lifelong fandom — and extended musical stay — when as a 21-year-old he hauled a large drum he bought at a garage sale for $25 into the outfield bleachers at Municipal Stadium on Aug. 24, 1973.While Cleveland’s teams struggled for many years, Adams was a steadying presence as he pounded away on his drum to help rally the home team. The Guardians are also loaning Adams’ drum to baseball’s Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, “for the foreseeable future.”Adams had been in declining health in recent years and wasn’t able to attend many games. He died in January at the age of 71. The team wore a “JA” patch on its jerseys on opening day an...

From tarantulas to tigers, the animals at London Zoo step onto the scales for their annual weigh-in LONDON (AP) — Staff at London Zoo got the measure of giant gorillas, plump penguins and skinny stick insects at the zoo’s annual animal weigh-in on Thursday.Zookeepers tempted squirrel monkeys onto scales with treats, totted up tarantulas and used a curry-scented measuring stick to coax Sumatran tigers to stretch out.Staff at the zoo, which is home to some 14,000 animals, will take several days to weigh and measure every mammal, bird, reptile, fish and invertebrate in its care. The results go into a database that is shared with zoos around the world.“We record the vital statistics of every animal at the zoo — from the tallest giraffe to the tiniest tadpole,” said Angela Ryan, the facility’s head of zoological operations.Ryan said an animal’s weight is vital information that can reveal whether creatures are healthy, and even which are pregnant.“We have critically endangered animals here,” she said. “It’s absolutely vital that we are managing them, managing their health, t...
